A Religious Bomber? (Untimely Meditations or Unfashionable Observations)

I heard on the news today that one of the Boston Marathon bombers recently “got very religious.” The name “Islam” is derived from the word for peace. A Muslim is one who has the peace that comes from submitting his or her life to God. That said, I would have to strongly reject the idea that he was religious at all. It sounds to me like the bomber was anti-religious, and anti-Islam.

Those who pervert the great religious traditions of the world can hardly be called religious. Is there a greater perversion of religion than violence?

Untimely Meditations or Unfashionable Observations are meant to provoke thought. They are not necessarily meant to convey the author’s actual opinion, and may be hypothetical in nature. The style is inspired by a certain oft-misunderstood European philosopher of the late 19th Century (he would have preferred to be called a European philosopher rather than a German philosopher) – “Dionysus.”
